A Story of Tattoos

Tattoos Meanings and the Artist Behind It All

Everyone has their opinions about tattoos and their meanings. Tattoos are not something new. People have been getting tattoos for centuries now. Tattoos are dated back to 3300 B.C. with Otzi the Iceman.  His preserved body is the oldest example of tattooing.

At one point in time tattoos were just a trend or the cool thing to do, but today I feel like people’s tattoos have more significance. As many of the people I interviewed said “they are a work of art”. Of course there are some that get tattoos on an impulse, while others put thought into theirs. In my video,“What Does It Mean To You” , I explore the different meanings of tattoos. I have come to the conclusion that the same two tattoos can also have very different meanings. What a tattoo symbolizes depends on the individual. I researched what some tattoos may symbolized and here are some of my findings.

  • Butterflies can symbolize change, a rebirth and beauty.
  •  Names symbolized people that are important to you. For example it can be your mother, father, spouse or children.
  •  Roses can symbolize various things depending on the color. For example, a red roe symbolizes love and beauty.
  •  Feathers, like roses can also have different meanings depending on the type of feather. Feathers are a symbol of the element of air.
Cat Wells tells us what her tattoos mean to her.
These are just a few meaning for some tattoos. As I have said be for the same tattoo can have different meanings for different people. It all depends on the individual and what they have gone through. Check out this video“What Does It Mean To You”, to see my friends’ unique meanings of their tattoos.
"I love tattoos," scream Jasmine in excitement

Not only are the tattoos important, but so are the tattoo artist. Lately in the media, we have seen tattoo artist taking the spotlight on reality shows, such TLC’s LA and Miami Ink, and VH1’s Black Ink Crew. These shows put shine on the dedication of tattoo artist and how their job is just as important as any other job in America.  I interviewed local tattoo artist, Chelsea Owens about her job and her tattoos.  Check out The Artist Behind the Tattoo.
